John Degnan has been appointed chairman of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, it has been reported. He replaces David Samson who resigned in March.

On July 23, the authority's board of commissioners formally approved Degnan – the former New Jersey attorney general – to head the bi-state agency.

The agency operates major airports, ports, bridges, tunnels and the World Trade Centre site in the New York City region.

Degnan said of Samson: “I believe Dave revitalised the committee structure within the Port Authority, he supported important initiatives to make the board more responsive and more transparent to the public. Clearly, more needs to be done.”
