Navis, a part of Cargotec Corporation, has announced that North Carolina Ports will implement the N4 terminal operating system (TOS) at facilities in Wilmington and Morehead City, as well as its inland terminal in Charlotte.

Handling a combined annual throughput of around 400,000 TEU across its various locations, as well as four million tons of general cargo, North Carolina Ports has been recognized for its self-sustaining operations and high levels of terminal safety.

Due to rising customer expectations and growing demand, the authority has chosen Navis’ N4 TOS to manage changing business requirements and achieve competitive advantages in the region.

The implementation of N4, which is set to begin in the next two months, is also part of a terminal enhancement project that will drive future growth and automation plans across ports in North Carolina.

As a result of the initiative, container throughput capacity at the Port of Wilmington will double from 600,000 to 1.2 million TEU, while a redesigned truck gate will enable the port to maintain efficiencies during this period of growth.

Paul J. Cozza, Executive Director of North Carolina Ports, commented: “North Carolina Ports is excited to partner with Navis as we continue to invest in our future.

“Choosing a world-class terminal operating system further fulfils North Carolina Ports’ commitment to sustainable growth and best-in-class levels of performance for our customers.”

Bill Corcoran, CIO of North Carolina Ports, added: “Navis’ technology produces the best opportunity for North Carolina Ports to use a single platform for all cargo handled at our terminals.

“Our ambitions reach well beyond the terminal operating systems and N4 gives us the foundation we need to increase velocity, safety and volume. We will achieve this via a series of automation projects connecting our technology with operations, our customers and the entire port constituency.”

In addition to the N4 TOS, Navis will also provide a range of professional services and training support to North Carolina, ensuring the smooth operation of the system into the future.

Susan Gardner, Vice President and General Manager for the Americas at Navis, also made a statement: “North Carolina Ports has a strong pedigree and successful track record supporting and enhancing the economy of North Carolina with its streamlined operations.

“As it looks to raise the bar on its terminal operations, customer service and safety initiatives, we are proud that N4 stood out as the only TOS solution that would help it realize its vision. We are eager to see what can be achieved together.”
