MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company, the second largest ocean carrier in the world, has partnered with technology provider TRAXENS to introduce smart container solutions.
According to a statement, MSC will equip 50,000 dry cargo containers with TRAXENS’ IoT solution, an Internet-connected device that fixes onto the container and transforms it into a “connected object”.
By collecting and communicating real-time data, the system not only signals the position and movements of the container, but also its temperature and humidity level.

In addition to this, the device keeps cargo secure by monitoring unexpected shocks and vibrations, as well as documenting when the container is opened and closed.
MSC expects its partnership with TRAXENS to enhance supply chain management for shippers, providing greater visibility, efficiency and safety.
Diego Aponte, President and CEO of MSC Group, commented: “MSC believes that the real-time tracking of containers is the future of the shipping industry.
“While shipping lines should of course compete on service, we will achieve better results for our customers by working in a more harmonised way on technology and innovation.
“Smart containers are a perfect example of where we can cooperate according to industry standards to make our services truly comprehensive and TRAXENS is the top innovator in this area.”
Following the implementation of its IoT solution, TRAXENS are also expected to facilitate easier and quicker pre-customs clearance for MSC’s customers.
