MPA assigns search and rescue operation for missing crew

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has coordinated a search and rescue operation with the Police Coast Guard (PCG) and the Singapore Civil Defence Force for a missing crew from the tugboat Oshio.

According to MPA, the tugboat sank in the Eastern Anchorage within Singapore’s port limits at around 2:15 p.m. (local time).

Two crew members were reported to be on board the tugboat at the time of the incident. One 39-year-old male crew member who had been rescued by PCG was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

MPA has dispatched salvage divers to determine the position of the sunken tug for recovery operations and issued navigational bulletins directing vessels to avoid the area.

There are no reports of oil contamination.

Recently, MPA received notification of an incident between the Singapore-flagged vessel Maersk Shekou and the tall ship STS Leeuwin II in the Port of Fremantle, Australia.
