Kalmar, a part of Cargotec Corporation, has agreed to deliver two rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs) to EUROGATE, Europe's leading shipping line-independent container terminal operator.

The equipment, which is expected to be received in Q3 2019, will be implemented at EUROGATE’s Tanger S.A. terminal, a transhipment hub located on the Strait of Gibraltar in Morocco.

According to a statement, the 400,000 square metre facility is well-equipped to handle the new generation of ultra-large container ships arriving from Africa and South America.

All RTGs currently operating at the terminal have been supplied by Kalmar, and the latest addition to the fleet is set to enable higher fuel savings and lower emissions at the terminal.

The new cranes will have a lifting capacity of 50 tons and be fitted with Kalmar’s SmartRail automated gantry steering solution, which uses Container Position Indication (CPI) technology to automatically control gantry steering and feed container coordinates to the Terminal Operating System.

The equipment will also feature Kalmar SmartFleet – a process automation solution that improves operational transparency and reduces downtime through remote equipment monitoring and reporting.

Andrea Cervia, CEO of EUROGATE Tanger S.A, said: “Kalmar RTGs have been the backbone of our operations for many years already, so it was a natural step to turn to Kalmar once again when it came to expanding our existing fleet.

“We appreciate Kalmar for their innovative technical solutions and we are sure to continue together to increase the terminal performance and reliability.”

Ilkka Annala, Vice President of Intelligent Crane Solutions at Kalmar, also commented: “We have enjoyed a very successful long-term relationship with EUROGATE Tanger, and we are very pleased that they have once again chosen our safe, reliable and fuel-efficient RTG solutions to support operations at the terminal.”
