Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has announced it unveiled its AR Navigation System at the ENOC Marine Conference and OCIMF Middle East Regional Marine Forum in Dubai in September.

The system is designed to display real-time video images and vehicles course information from nautical instruments on a display in the bridge in the most congested sea lanes.

It allows mariners to ensure that they are on a safe course and alerts them to nearby vessels that could pose a risk, as well as shallow sea areas and other potential hazards.

MOL presented the system to 200 representatives of the tanker industry and said it was committed to becoming the ‘world leader in safe operation.’

MOL’s idea to utilize AR was first mooted in April 2019, which Port Technology International reported on at the time.

The Japanese carrier put forward plans to install its system on 21 of its very large crude oil carriers (VLCC) in the first phase of a fleet-wide upgrade.
