Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has received approval in principle (AiP) from Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) for the design of a membrane LNG Carrier with Wind Challenger.
According to MOL, this AiP is the reportedly world’s first clearance for an LNG carrier using a Wind-Assisted Propulsion System.
The LNG carrier that obtained this AiP can approach LNG terminals worldwide (cargo tank capacity: 174,000 cubic metres) and is equipped with two Wind Challenger sails.

MOL has purchased a new LNG carrier from Hanwha Ocean, and comprehensive design work is underway in preparation for installation.
MOL, Hanwha Ocean, and ClassNK reportedly undertook a risk assessment that extensively analysed issues such as sail positioning, influence on visibility, emergency operation procedures, and other safety precautions, which resulted in the AiP.
Furthermore, the influence of the sail installation on the cargo tank was assessed by Gaztransport et Technigaz SA (GTT), the vessel’s cargo tank designer.
GTT concluded that the tank’s structural safety is adequately assured, even when considering the strains applied by sails.
