Modern Terminals has pledged to eliminate direct greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030, and to become carbon neutral by 2050.
Highlighting the company’s new sustainability strategy announced 6 September, the pledge includes long-term goals for its five sustainability pillars – Corporate Governance, People, Health & Safety, Environment, and Community Involvement.
To achieve the decarbonisation goals, Modern Terminals will introduce renewable energy at its facilities and plans to electrify all container handling equipment and yard vehicles.
A total of 291 solar panels will be installed on the rooftop of Modern Terminals’ Warehouse Building, with an area of approximately 1,000 square metres.
The installation is expected to be completed in the final quarter of 2021.
Upon completion, the system will generate about 140,000 units (kWh) of electricity each year and can help reduce 51,800 kg of carbon emissions (CO2) per annum.
Other long-term goals cover topics including technology and automation, supply chain management, green finance, diversity and inclusion, health, safety and wellness for employees and contractor workers, and community engagement.
