French President Francois Hollande is preparing to give the green light on a fresh shower of air strikes on Syria – a move which could potentially displace thousands more refugees and effectively drive them away from their country.
As a result of the crisis, up to an estimated 20 million Syrians have been displaced, with Turkey taking almost 2 million people and German Chancellor Angela Merkel vowing to take 800,000 Syrians.
Calls have come from across the political spectrum, and none less than the Pope, for EU governments to accept more migrants.
Debate is ongoing on the correct terminology to use when referring to the displaced Syrians, with some arguing that because of the devastation in their homeland, they are refugees, not (economic) migrants.
