Container shipping giant MSC is to receive delivery of the MSC Oliver in April 2015, and will join its partner ship, the MSC Oscar as the largest containership in the world with a total capacity of 19,224 TEU, reports gCaptain.

The MSC Oscar was previously named the world’s largest ship, a title that it took away from the CSCL Globe, which has a capacity of 19,100 TEU.

Although these larger ships will help shipping lines to lower their costs and achieve economies of scale in the market, there are concerns among port and terminal operators that ports will not have the appropriate technology to handle these ships.

MSC’s 2M partner Maersk Line is also looking to order more ships in this capacity range after predicting a 3-5% increase in the demand for container shipping in 2015.

The 2M vessel-sharing-alliance between MSC and Maersk Line was established in a bid to lower costs per unit for both carriers and increase its overall competitiveness.
