Meet our Sponsors for PTS North America: Nokia

As we gear up for the Port Technology Summit North America next week, we’re excited to share insights from our Gold Sponsor, Nokia, on how digitalisation and sustainability are shaping the future of ports and terminals in the US.

Join us from 4 – 6 February 2025 at Hilton The Main, Norfolk, Virginia for this landmark event. Combining the best of the Container Terminal Automation Conference and Smart Digital Ports Conference, the Summit will feature keynotes, panel discussions, and networking with C-level leaders tackling the industry’s biggest challenges.

How do you see digitalisation shaping the future of ports and terminals in North America?

Digitalisation is expected to revolutionise ports and terminals in North America by improving operational efficiency, situational awareness and connectivity. The adoption of technologies such as private wireless, industrial edge, and artificial intelligence will optimise logistics, container handling times, terminal throughput and decision-making. For instance, private wireless enables stronger and more consistent connectivity which is vital for seamless operation of Terminal Operating Systems (TOS), critical worker communication, autonomous vehicles, cranes and other automated systems.

Business-critical 5G private wireless provides increased reliability, speed and pervasive coverage, which is especially important in highly dynamic and constantly changing environments like port terminals. Combined with edge computing, which facilitates real-time data processing on-site, port operators can now facilitate advanced automation and real-time data analytics and monitoring, which enhances operational efficiency and safety. Ship-to-shore (STS), rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes, A-Strad, automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and remote-controlled cranes, for example, can operate with greater precision and fewer interruptions.

For instance, one of our port customers in Finland deployed real-time Digital Twin and video-based situational awareness on their private wireless network which enabled them to save on fuel per vessel per port call to ship company, as well as fewer injuries and safer working conditions due to reduced manual intervention.

What role do you believe sustainability will play in the port industry over the next decade?

Sustainability will become a cornerstone of the port industry’s future. Ports will prioritise reducing greenhouse gas emissions through the adoption of electrified equipment, renewable energy sources, and shore power solutions. Initiatives like zero-emission vessels and green hydrogen fuel will also gain momentum. Furthermore, ports will integrate sustainable practices into their supply chains and adopt circular economy principles, ensuring minimal waste and resource reuse. A strong focus on sustainability will not only protect the environment but also enhance competitiveness and attract eco-conscious customers.

Digitalisation will play an important role in this journey to make operations more efficient and, therefore, more sustainable, by reducing fuel, material waste and energy consumption. It provides ports with a foundation they can put in place today to achieve immediate gains, and scale in tandem with their growing sustainability needs over the next years.

How can ports better collaborate with technology providers to accelerate innovation?

Effective collaboration requires fostering long-term partnerships between ports and technology providers. Open communication channels, combined with a clear understanding of operational challenges, will help providers design tailored solutions. Industry 4.0 excellence doesn’t happen in isolation. We have cultivated a broad ecosystem of experienced partners to plan and build technology solutions that deliver tangible business outcomes. By collaborating with leading application, device, and industry partners, we combine deep industry and technology expertise to help realise the digitalisation of industrial enterprises.

What motivated you to attend the Port Technology Summit North America, and what key insights are you hoping to gain from the discussions and networking opportunities?

Attending the Port Technology Summit North America is an opportunity to stay at the forefront of industry trends, innovations, and best practices. The event provides a platform to network with industry leaders, technology providers, and policymakers to discuss shared challenges and potential solutions, to understand emerging and more sustainable technologies.
