As we gear up for our first-ever Maritime Safety Series: Ports Edition, we’ve had the privilege of speaking with some of our speakers about the critical importance of safety in maritime operations and why attending this event could be an invaluable step towards steering the industry toward a safer future for all.
In this interview, we’re excited to share insights from Jan Jacob Andreassen, HSEQ Manager at G2 Ocean.
Why is safety a critical focus in the maritime industry today?
It is a focus because the situation is indeed critical, the number of fatalities and severe injuries among port workers and crew is still high, compared to almost any other industry. Looking back in time, expectations for a safe workplace are higher now, many stakeholders are simply no longer accepting the current state.
What inspired you to participate in the Maritime Safety Series event?
As commercial vessel operators, we believe we have an important role to play. We can reach across the boundaries between the shippers and charterers, us as the vessel operator, and vessel crew, stevedores and other personnel on the sharp end.
What key message or insight do you hope to share with attendees?
It is possible to make our industry safer! Most accidents are entirely preventable. By sharing insights, being innovative, and integrating what we know into our behaviour and actions we can get there.
