MAWANI cargo volumes leap 16 per cent in June

The Saudi Ports Authority (MAWANI) has recorded a significant increase in cargo throughput volumes reaching 27.1 million tonnes in June 2022.

The figure represents a 16.1 per cent growth compared to the 23.4 million tonnes recorded during June 2021.

The container sector registered a steady surge of 5.5 per cent to reach 642,300 TEU, compared to the 608,800 TEU recorded in the same period last year. Transshipment containers also increased by 4.2 per cent with a total of 244,600 TEU as opposed to the 234,700 TEU in June 2021.

MAWANI said that investments to the upgrade ports’ capabilities resulted in a 55.7 per cent increase in general cargo volumes to reach 790,500 tonnes.

The number of vessels also rose, up to 1,126 vessels, as well as the number of vehicles – which increased by 25.8 per cent to reach a total traffic of 74,000.

The news follows MAWANI’s growth in cargo throughput and transshipment container volumes registered during the first quarter of 2022.

However, according to its statistics, Saudi ports recorded a decrease in container throughput down by 1.27 per cent, with a total of 2.5 million containers.
