Maersk, the largest shipping carrier in the world by market share, will become the first line to offer street turn services on its platform in the US and Canada, as part of a collaboration with E2Open company Avantida, according to a statement.

Street turning is a common practice in the US and involves the interchange of an intermodal container between two truckers without involving a marine terminal or yard.

By offering the service on its online platform, Avantida says transport and logistic companies will be free from the costs and delays brought on by processing street turns manually and the resulting administration.

Through the automated request process offered by Maersk, dispatchers and planners requesting street turns will get an accurate and reliable response in minutes, which Avantida suggests will save money and cut CO2 emissions.

The announcement is the latest in a series of initiatives from Maersk to diversify its business operations and become an integrated container logistics transport company.

In November 2018 it led a group of five carriers in forming a new association that specifically looked into paving the way for digitization, standardization and interoperability in the maritime industry.

Speaking about the partnership with Maersk, Luc De Clerck, CEO Avantida, said: “Both shipping lines and transporters continue to look for agile, cost-saving tools that can optimise their planning, and our platform has a proven track record of improving efficiency.

“The platform has changed the way shipping lines in Europe are doing business, and after our launch in Mexico, it was a natural next step to introduce Avantida to the United States and Canada”.
