Maersk Line may have once again set the standard as it is revealed its new second generation Triple-E class vessels could well be exceeding the current mega-ship record of 20,000 TEUs, according to gCaptain.

Photographs have been taken of the ship, Maersk Madrid, at a port in South Korea, from Alphaliner experts have been able to discern that the ships could have a “notably higher capacity” than the initially thought 19,630 capacity; Mr Skou, Maersk Line CEO, has previously stated that load factors were reaching record highs.

Alphaliner stated: “First images from the shipyard suggest that Maersk Line has extensively modified the design of the ships to further increase container intake.” The biggest modification is the clear change in bridge position, having moved two bays forward and also shifting the engine room.

This news comes after PTI reported that Maersk was experiencing record losses in the current volatile shipping market, which has been caused by massive oversupply; the ailing market claimed Hanjin, which is close to liquidity following its asset sales.

Maersk line has announced it has reopened its calls to Iran following the lift of its trade sanctions by the international community, hoping it will alleviate some of the oversupply it is experiencing, however it appears the industry continues to surprise, as PTI has also reported recently that Maersk Line was both cancelling calls and was not going to be purchasing any more vessels.
