Lloyd’s Register (LR) and Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) have inked a joint development project (JDP) for an ammonia-fueled container vessel with a capacity of 9,300 TEU.
The announcement was made on 19 September at Gastech 2024 in Houston.
Under the agreement, SHI will collaborate with Eastern Pacific Shipping to conduct design studies on the ammonia-fueled container vessel, while LR will examine SHI deliverables and give technical advise for further design development.
This AiP follows another AiP for a 20,000 cubic-metre (CBM) LCO2 carrier from LR.
Sung-Gu Park, President – North East Asia, Lloyd’s Register, said: “There is a growing demand for container vessels that incorporate innovative technologies to comply with stringent regulations and environmental standards for zero carbon.”
Hae Ki Jang, CTO & EVP SHI, stated: “Ammonia is a carbon-free fuel for a future eco-friendly society. Through this JDP, SHI will continue to develop technologies that position itself as a market leading company, driving forward sustainable fuel solutions for the maritime sector.”
