The Long Beach Board of Harbour Commissioners has approved a fiscal year 2014/15 budget that calls for US$579 million in capital expenditure.

The expenditure aims to cover the replacement of the Gerald Desmond Bridge and the redevelopment of the Middle Harbour container terminal.

With a total budget of US$858 million, Long Beach plans to spend US$30 million on environmental projects.

Doubling the capacity of Middle Harbour and replacing the bridge with a structure will allow the industry’s largest container ships to pass underneath.

Middle Harbour will have an annual capacity of three million TEU, and will be one of the most automated container terminals in North America.
