Lloyd’s Register grants HMD approval for 20,000 CBM LCO2 vessel

HD Hyundai Mipo Co., Ltd. (HMD) has received an approval in principle (AiP) for a 20,000 cubic-metre (CBM) LCO2 carrier from Lloyd’s Register (LR) after completing a joint development project (JDP).

HMD was awarded the AiP on 19 September at Gastech 2024 in Houston.

The vessel supports the developing CO2 value chain, emphasizing the relevance of solutions like Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in energy transition and meeting the Paris Agreement’s goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

The JDP aimed to understand the operating characteristics of LCO2 carriers, as well as their design and viability.

The 20,000 CBM carrier is known for its optimised cargo tank configuration, which was meant to improve cost efficiency while maintaining a maximum design pressure of 19 bar. This optimisation was a critical component of the JDP, with the goal of improving both technical and economic efficiency.

Furthermore, the development process includes a comprehensive technical evaluation conducted by LR focused on fracture mechanics, with Engineering Critical Assessment (ECA) applied to the adoption of 690 megapascal (MPa) minimum yield strength material for the cargo tanks.

Dongjin Lee, Vice President of Head of initial Design division at HMD, stated: “Our ongoing collaboration with has equipped both HMD and LR with invaluable expertise and insights into LCO2 cargo tank design, positioning us at the forefront of the shipbuilding market.

“This approval is a testament to our commitment to advancing energy transition technologies and pioneering sustainable maritime fuel solutions.”

Recently, LR reported that the maritime artificial intelligence (AI) industry is already worth $4.13 billion, with a 23 per cent compound annual growth rate expected over the next five years.
