Liebherr Container Cranes, a cargo handling solutions provider, has agreed to deliver 10 electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes (ERTGs) to the Montréal Gateway Terminals Partnership (MGT).
Following the retrofitting of two existing RTG’s with a conductor bar system, allowing for full electric operation, the new cranes are expected to reduce emissions and noise pollution.
Each of the ten cranes, five of which will be deployed at Cast Terminal, and the other five at Racine Terminal, have a safe working load of 40.6 tonnes and are able to handle six containers.

In addition to this, Liebherr’s heavy-duty crane drive system Liduro will be implemented on board, as well as productivity and safety aids such as DGPS, automatic gantry steering, and anti-collision systems.
Michael Fratianni, CEO of MGT, commented: “This important investment in energy-efficient, state-of-the-art RTGs will serve to support MGT's continuous efforts to optimize productivity and capacity at its terminals, while significantly reducing carbon and nitrogen dioxide emissions.
“This equipment upgrade program is the most recent in a series of initiatives undertaken by MGT to improve productivity and expand capacity in an environmentally responsible fashion.”

Daniel Boyer, Vice President of Maintenance and Engineering at MGT, also made a statement: “We are delighted to have teamed up with our longstanding partner, Liebherr Container Cranes, who over the last three decades have supplied us with high quality and very reliable container handling machinery.
“We look forward to commissioning the ERTGs in 2019. This new equipment will offer cost savings, environmental benefits and improve overall efficiency. The ERTGs will also dramatically reduce noise and extend equipment life.”
