The Norwegian Port of Drammen has invested in a new Liebherr mobile harbour crane, which began operation in June 2014.

The new LHM 550 crane is equipped with Liebherr’s Pactronic hybrid drive system and is claimed to be the first to achieve increased handling performance with reduced fuel consumption. In addition, Pactronic has been designed to reduce fuel/energy consumption (litre/ton) as well as CO2 and exhaust emissions by around 30%.

The crane provides a lifting capacity of 144t – over 40t more than the strongest of current machines operating at the port. By purchasing the new crane, the Port of Drammen has doubled its container-handling capacity.

Port director Einar Olsen said: “We are experiencing a significant container traffic increase in Drammen. Due to the LHM 550, we have sufficient capacity to smoothly handle current container volumes. Moreover, we have capacity available for future growth.”

The new mobile harbour crane is expected to attract new business. Its’ high lifting capacity is of special importance to the subsea industry and has enabled the Port of Drammen to boost its competitiveness.
