Liebherr announces large scale South African crane order

  • Four STS and 18 RTGs for Transnet

Liebherr have been awarded a contract to supply four ship-to-shore (STS) cranes and 18 rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs) to Transnet Port Terminal's Ngqura container facility in South Africa.

The order will be fulfilled with the assistance of Liebherr Container Cranes in Ireland.

The New STS cranes will have an outreach of 65 metres, a span of 30.48 metres and a back reach of 19 metres. The cranes have a lift height of 41 metres and will be capable of lifting a 65-tonne load under a twin lift spreader.

Furthermore, the cranes have been optimised to deal with the new line of 18,000 TEU vessels, with a reach up to 24 rows across.

The new RTGs designed for Ngqura will span seven containers and a truck lane and can stack up to five containers high. Each RTG comes with a list of features including DGPS, auto steering and container location recognition systems. They will also interface with the TOS system, providing container location and weight information.

To maximise safety each RTG will be fitted with an ultrasonic anti-collision system. Cameras will be fitted to each RTG, capable of monitoring travel in both directions, with a direct feed sent to monitors in the driver’s cabin.

Liebherr’s eight-rope reeving anti-sway system is installed as standard and effectively eliminates sway, even under windy conditions. This should provide a 30-40 percent increase over alternative models.

The RTGs are also fitted with Liebherr’s dual speed drive system in order to reduce noise levels, emissions and fuel consumption.

These will be the first of their kind to be supplied to Transnet Port Terminals.

Over the last two years Liebherr delivered nine mobile harbour cranes to Transnet, increasing the total to 13.

In 2012 Leibherr delivered two STS container cranes to Ngqura Container Terminal.

After fulfilling this new order, Liebherr will have supplied Transnet Port Terminals with 31 STS cranes in total.
