Liebherr enhances Port Liberty’s STS crane capabilities

Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd. has announced the completion of a significant improvement project at Port Liberty (formerly Global Container Terminals) in New York.

Liebherr has reportedly raised the lift height and extended the boom tip on three of the port’s four Liebherr ship-to-shore container cranes (STS), with the fourth crane set to be finished in the coming weeks.

Liebherr engineers raised the lift height and stretch of its STS cranes by 8.6 metres and 5 metres, respectively, enabling the cranes to handle larger vessels.

With Liebherr’s innovative jacking technology, the lift height may be increased in a matter of weeks. The technique relies on the crane’s end carriage as a sturdy basis for jacking, avoiding the need for extra equipment.

According to Liebherr, the procedure is extremely swift and efficient, resulting in minimum disturbance to terminal operations.

In March, Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd. announced the handover of four electric Rubber-Tyred Gantry cranes (ERTG) to customers in Italy.
