Liebherr Port Simulator en Route to New Zealand

Lifting technology specialists Liebherr has announced that its LiSIM simulator, a solution which combines mobile harbour crane and ship crane simulation technologies, is on its way to Port Nelson, New Zealand.

According to a statement, the LiSIM solution will help the port in its efforts to improve its maritime operations by providing a safe and cost-effective training environment for various situations.

The ship crane feature of the simulator features a floating four-rope grab crane with a boom length of 28 metres and maximum lifting capacity of up to 45 tonnes.

The mobile harbour element is equipped with its original LiTRONIC crane controls and has training programs installed for basic operations, bulk, breakbulk and container handling and this reflects the port’s multi-port ambitions.

It is currently at sea and Liebherr expects it to arrive at the port on New Zealand’s South Island by April 2019.

Speaking about the simulator, Jonny Cook, the port’s Container Operations Manager, said:

 “The simulator allows benchmarking of current driver skills and monitoring of drivers using periodic checks, plus can be used to assess new drivers for suitability without the costs associated with running a real crane, such as fuel and wear-and-tear.

“It will make for safer and more efficient handling in a variety of weather conditions. We also expect it to reduce box damage during operations.”
