Kuenz, an Austrian crane manufacturer, has received a major order from ÖBB for five autonomous gantry cranes with remote control stations at the TSA INFRA terminals in Vienna South, Wels, and Wolfurt.
This is reportedly one of Europe’s largest intermodal orders in recent years.
Sabine Ujhelyi, Head of Development for Goods Centers at ÖBB, said: “I am pleased about this investment because, on the one hand, it means a significant expansion of equipment capacities and, on the other hand, it also strengthens the Austrian economy.”
In addition to receiving new cranes, the current cranes in Wolfurt and Vienna South will be upgraded to automated operation.

The cranes will be outfitted with sensors that can identify containers and place cargoes on lorries or waggons with millimetre accuracy.
According to Künz, crane operators will have access to office workspaces that allow for manual and semi-automatic operation via remote control stations.
These remote control stations also make it easier to hire persons with impairments.
David Moosbrugger, CEO of Künz, commented: “This order underscores the extremely successful cooperation between ÖBB and Künz over the past decades. The cranes are of the highest technological standard, and we are extremely proud to have won this major order.”
This delivery is scheduled to take place in Q4 2027.
In March 2024, ABB and Kuenz secured the largest single order of Automatic Stacking Cranes (ASCs) made by a European terminal.
