Konecranes, a provider of smart port solutions, has announced plans to establish a “data science laboratory” in Lyon, France, supporting its drive to deliver market-leading digital products to heavy industries.

According to a statement, Konecranes has 20,000 connected devices across the world, forming the basis for a powerful industrial internet with superior data-handling capabilities.

In April 2019, Konecranes will further this movement by opening the Data Science Lab, a project which has been carried out in partnership with Business France and Invest in Lyon.

Juha Pankakoski, Executive Vice President, Technologies at Konecranes, said: “Digitalized processes and connected products generate massive amounts of data that have improved what we offer our customers.

“However, we’ve now reached a point where we can mine even more data to allow us to create new business models and give greater value for our customers.”

With the facility requiring a talented team of data scientists and researchers, especially those with experience in heavy industries, Lyon became the favoured location for the laboratory.

Konecranes has described Lyon as a centre for manufacturing and heavy industry, as well as an innovation hub for machine learning. In addition to this, Lyon is home to one of the largest universities in France.

Pankakoski added: “This combination will help us to develop new material handling solutions. We’re looking forward to establishing this new centre of excellence in France.”

Jean Charles Foddis, Executive Director of Invest in Lyon, also commented: “As the capital of France’s most important industrial region, and the second digital hub in the country, Lyon is the perfect home for the new Konecranes Data Science Lab.

“This project completely aligns with the Greater Lyon’s strong involvement in the digitalization of industries.”
