Knud E. Hansen Showcases New Electric RoRo Ship


Knud E. Hansen, a maritime engineering company, has released an image of its new electric Grimaldi Green 5th Generation (GG5G) roll-on, roll-off (RoRo) vessel.

Nanjing Jinling Shipyard in China will develop a number of large RoRo vessels based on the Knud E. Hansen design, which also involved the Technical and Energy Saving Department of the Grimaldi Group — a multinational logistics company specialized in the operation of RoRo vessels, car carriers and ferries.

The vessels have large lithium batteries to supply electricity and produce zero emissions while the ship is at berth.

The batteries recharge during navigation through shaft generators and with the aid of 600m2 of solar panels.

Scheduled for delivery in 2020, the GG5G will have a length of 238 metres, a beam of 34 metres and a gross tonnage of 64,000 tonnes.

This will allow the ship to transport over 7,800 lane meters of rolling units, equivalent to approximately 500 trailers.
