Kalmar, a part of Cargotec Corporation, has agreed to supply 30 of its Ottawa T2 Terminal Tractors to the Tecon Santos container terminal in Brazil.
Tecon Santos, operated by Santos Brasil Participações S.A., is part of the largest port in Latin America and one of Brazil’s biggest container terminals.
According to a statement, the terminal covers an area of almost 600,000 square metres (sqm), including 12,000 sqm of warehousing space, and has annual handling capacity of 2 million TEU.
The new terminal tractors, which join several rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs), empty container handlers and terminal tractors already in operation at the facility, form part of the Tecon Santos’ fleet expansion programme, addressing a significant growth in demand during 2018.

Ottawa T2 equipment is designed to make trailer handling operations more controlled and efficient, offering more functionality and ensuring easier maintenance.
Features of the new equipment include faster fifth-wheel lifting to speed up trailer handling, a redesigned cab for improved driver comfort, and easily accessible service points to expedite routine checks.
In addition to this, the tractor’s modular chassis is built to cope with the heavy demands of terminal operations, despite being lightweight enough to reduce fuel consumption and increase manoeuvrability.

Maros Silva Tavares, Director of Operations at Tecon Santos, commented: “Since Kalmar equipment already makes up such a large proportion of our existing fleet, it was natural that we turned to them once again to support us with our extensive fleet expansion programme.
We have seen demand rise sharply during 2018, handling 2.9% more containers in the first half of the year compared to the same period in 2017.
“The new terminal tractors will be instrumental in helping us address this growth and ensuring our operations can continue to run smoothly and efficiently.”
Marcelo Massa, Solution Sales Manager at Kalmar, added: “The Kalmar Ottawa T2 is highly appreciated by customers all around the world for its ability to ensure safe and efficient trailer spotting in terminal environments.
“We are delighted to be able to continue our long and successful partnership with Tecon Santos with this latest order, which demonstrates the high regard in which they hold the technical capabilities and reliability of our machines.”
