Lifting solutions provider Kalmar has agreed to deliver four rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs) with hybrid drivelines to Exolgan S.A, for use at its container terminal in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

As the leading port operator in Argentina, and a member of International Trade Logistics (ITL), Exolgan handles one third of the country’s foreign trade container throughput.

Exolgan’s Buenos Aires terminal, which handles both general and containerized cargo, has access to a number of strategic road, rail and river transport connections.

The new Hybrid RTGs from Kalmar, which are scheduled to arrive in late 2019, form part of the port operator’s fleet expansion programme, Exolgan’s terminal already using Kalmar RTGs, empty container handlers, forklift trucks and reachstackers.

According to a statement, Kalmar’s Hybrid RTG builds on the sustainable performance of the former model, boosting fuel efficiency, reducing emissions and decreasing maintenance costs.

In addition to this, the machines combine the latest lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery technology with a fuel-efficient diesel power unit.

Peter Söderberg, Kalmar, discusses eco-efficient terminal operations in a recent Port Technology technical paper

Carlos Mancini, Engineering Manager at Exolgan, commented on the new equipment: “Kalmar's Hybrid RTG solution was the ideal choice for us since it will both help us reduce fuel costs and improve the sustainability of our operations by reducing noise and airborne emissions.

“We value our relationship with Kalmar and are looking forward to working together to increase performance and reliability at our terminal.”

Alexandre Esse, Sales Manager for Ports & Terminals at Kalmar Americas, added: “Our second-generation hybrid RTG is a highly fuel-efficient machine that makes no compromises on performance or sustainability.

“We are pleased to be able to continue our fruitful cooperation with Exolgan with this latest order, which further demonstrates the confidence that customers have in our hybrid technologies.”

As well as being fuel-efficient, each RTG will be fitted with the Kalmar SmartRail automated gantry steering solution with Container Position Indication (CPI), which automatically controls gantry steering and transfers container coordinates to the terminal operating system.
