  • Kalmar awarded €2 million contract to retrofit two STS cranes

Kalmar, part of Finnish-based Cargotec, will retrofit and upgrade two NDC ship-to-shore (STS) cranes in Hong Kong for SITA Waste Services Ltd.

The order, valued at around €2 million, will be undertaken by Kalmar’s specialist Crane Services team.

Starting in December 2013, the project, taking place at the waste management firm’s West Kowloon transfer station where the STS cranes are used for solid waste container handling, will include the replacement of the electrical control system (PLC and AC Drives), hoisting motors, wire rope drum, hoisting frame and head block. In addition, each unit will be repainted and retrofitted with new gantry motors, equalizer beams and boogies along with all cables and festoons.

“With original spare parts hard to come by and the cranes approaching their sixteenth year of service, we needed to take action,” said SITA project engineering manager, Sunny Kwong.

The complex refurbishment is set for completion by the end of March 2014.
