Japanese carrier Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) has reached an agreement with Hiroshima University, the National Institute of Maritime, Port and Aviation Technology (MPAT) and Marubeni Corporation (Marubeni) to research and analysis on artificial intelligence’s (AI) potential to improve shipping operations.
In a statement, K Line said it is working to improve the quality of its existing services and that the project will explore accurate predictive models.
Furthermore, it is looking to organically integrate and develop various technologies and services across its entire business for the foreseeable future. As well as that, it is also hoping to build new business models that better serve current market conditions.
AI and its potential for improving industrial and logistical operations is currently the source of much research, particularly in the field of big and ‘smart’ data.
The ultimate purpose of the initiative is to estimate maritime logistics by combining data and technology, which will be the basis of the aforementioned predictive models.
“K Line Group is promoting the application of digital technology which never stops evolving, such as AI/IoT to our existing business by assigning “AI/Digitalization Promotion Division” as a driver,” the carrier said.
“We are also working to organically integrate and develop the various technologies and services cultivated across all divisions to date, and to move forward not only internally, but also through proactive cooperation with universities and other external research institutes, so that we can construct new business models more effectively and with a greater sense of speed .
“K Line will continue to promote the creation of new values by combining its own knowledge on shipping cultivated for the past 100 years with new experience and knowledge of Hiroshima University, MPAT and Marubeni.”
