The Port of Rotterdam and TPK Logística and Van Oord have recently signed an agreement for the development and construction of a new Brazilian Port, Porto Central, reported Dredging Today.

The objective of the joint venture project is a new high quality port, built time-effectively and efficiently; it is the first venture of its type for a complete Greenfield port project.

Van Oord has been involved in many port development projects in the region, including dredging projects at the ports of Santos and Rio de Janeiro and a gas pipeline development between the Santos Basin and Cabiúnas.

Technical Paper: Unleashing the rest of Latin America’s potential

The development will be less than a thousand kilometres north of the Port of Santos, where environmentalist have criticised dredging projects, claiming it has caused massive flooding in the area, which was so severe the port closed operations.

It is yet to be seen if the new port development, up the coast from Santos, will suffer the same environmental issues; many ports, such as the Port of Portland, fall behind if they are unable to become ‘mega-ship ready’.
