Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) has recently completed a dredging project and has deepened its fairway to a depth of 14 metres, which will enable India’s top port to handle larger containerships, according to the Journal of Commerce.

The port is now preparing to welcome the 13,800 TEU SC Cristina.

Technical Paper: Ports and Terminals in India

Anil Singh, Subcontinent Senior Vice President and Managing Director at DP World, said: “DP World has always aimed at being a pioneer in the industry, seeking to introduce new services and facilities as part of our commitment to customers. NSIGT is the only terminal at JN Port to have the requisite state-of-the-art facilities to receive such modern vessels.”

JNPT recently saw container volumes slow at its port, having recorded 0.1% growth, which is said to have been caused by labour and congestion issues.

Despite slow performance, Bharat Mumbai Container Terminal, a subsidiary of PSA International, recently laid the foundations for a new container terminal at JNPT.
