Contractors with the Jacksonville Port Authority (JAXPORT) have finished a year-long project to enlarge vehicle Berth 22 at the port’s Blount Island Marine Terminal.
The berth is the first of two enhancements to vehicle berths as part of a $60 million initiative to increase efficiency and manage more vehicle vessel calls.
Berth 22 may now accept bigger vehicle vessels than before. Berth 22 can now handle vehicle vessels with an overall length of about 750 feet.
A new car berth is currently under construction on Blount Island. Construction of the new berth is expected to take 24 months and be finished in early 2027.

JAXPORT CEO, Eric Green, said: “Maintaining congestion-free vessel facilities as cargo volumes grow is an important part of our short and long-term planning processes.
“These upgrades allow us to serve our auto customers more efficiently while providing additional capacity for future growth, so we can continue to build on our position as one of the nation’s top vehicle-handling ports.”
The Florida Department of Transportation contributed 75 per cent of the project’s funds, with a 25 per cent JAXPORT match.
