ITS set to establish CO₂ infrastructure
Inter Terminals Sweden (ITS), in close collaboration with the Port of Södertälje, has taken a step towards establishing an open infrastructure for captured CO2 in the Mälardalen region.

The project begins with a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) and permitting process to enable intermediate storage of regionally captured CO2 and loading onto vessels for further transport to permanent storage or utilisation.

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) are crucial technologies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and creating negative emissions. Technologies for capturing carbon dioxide from industrial processes and power plants before it reaches the atmosphere and then transporting it to safe permanent storage or utilisation – for example, in the production of e-fuels – contribute to achieving both national and global climate goals, reported ITS.

The project concept is scalable and supports a phased implementation, adaptable to the development of the CCUS market in the region over the coming years.

ITS’s fully completed facility is expected to be ready and operational by 2030.

“This initiative marks an important milestone for Inter Terminals, positioning us as a key enabler in the emerging CO2-logistics market in Mälardalen,” said Johan Zettergren, Managing Director of ITS.

“The objective is to offer an open and accessible solution for all regional companies aiming to capture CO2 and seeking efficient solutions for storage or for reuse.”

Måns Frostell, CEO of Södertälje Port, further added: “This joint initiative further strengthens Södertälje Port’s position as a hub for sustainable freight logistics and the future infrastructure for energy management in the Stockholm region.”

Late last year, Ports of Stockholm announced an innovative project that combines onshore power supply (OPS) and microgrid technology with its partners.
