INFORM has announced its new Train Builder as part of their Train Load Optimizer (TLO) add-on optimisation solution for maritime and intermodal terminal operators.

During INFORM’s keynote at the Container Terminal Automation Conference in May 2021, Dr. Rafael Velasquez commented, “The Train Builder produces what we call a train plan. It states which railcar, currently on the terminal, will be a part of an outbound subtrain and to which hub destination it is going to head. With outbound trains being lengthier than the terminal’s tracks, the time that a subtrain is pulled from the rail area is also decisive and a part of the train plan.”

“Making the best decisions to drive resiliency within intermodal and rail operations can be achieved by considering the ecosystem these facilities operate within and the Train Builder does just that via the features highlighted.”

Managing a heterogenous fleet of railcars with different rail operators? The Train Builder distinguishes between railways collaborating and sharing railcars from railways operating with wagons of their own.

Handling very long trains with services to many destinations within one outbound train? The Train Builder takes into consideration the marshalling order of the hubs and proposes pulling times that ease the railway’s work of concatenating the train.

Hitting fuzzy min/max railcar lengths for every outbound train destination? The Train Builder targets these and ensures that the total outbound train length is not exceeded.

Planning and re-planning the train when railcars are repaired or marked as damaged? The Train Builder intelligently updates the train plan to integrate these to an ongoing load process or finds suitable replacements.

Using scarce resources efficiently, such as railcars that can hold heavy 20’ containers? The Train Builder identifies which outbound train and destination can make the best use of these scarce resources and proposes them accordingly.
