An infographic released by the International Transport Forum shows the number of terminals that are currently being operated by each terminal operator, with the coloured squares representing terminals owned by that specific operator and the grey squares showing the total number of joint ventures.

PTI previously reported on the top five terminal operators in terms of TEU handled, with PSA International making the top spot.

In the infographic, Hutchison Port Holdings can be seen with the largest number of joint ventures – represented by the squares between the lines split into two colours – suggesting that terminal are working more closely together, presumably in a bid to more effectively handle the surge in mega-ship alliances.

Maersk and MSC recently announced the addition of container line MOL to its fleet of ships that will operate on one of its global trade routes.

The surge in mega-ship alliances has caused many issues for ports in recent months, with ports questioning whether they will have sufficient yard and crane technologies to support the increase in trade volumes.

With orders placed by Maersk recently for another ten 20,000 TEU ships, the number of orders has spiked in 2015 to record highs, with Japan taking the most orders for new-build contracts.

Ports are now being urged to look at alternative solutions such as vessel-stowage planning and greater collaboration to not only boost communication between ports and shipping lines, but in order to manage larger container volumes.
