A video released recently shows Arjun Batra, Managing Director of Drewry Shipping Consultants interviewing Olaf Merk, Administrator of Ports and Shipping with the International Transport Forum and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development on the challenges facing Singapore as a port and maritime city. This section forms part of the overall debate as to the impacts of shipping on cities and vice-versa.
In the video, Olaf Merk says that the challenges for Singapore will be dependent on what competitors decide to do to compete with them. Competitors will be a threat if they are able to benefit from their geographical location. In the meantime, to maintain its position as the world’s leading transhipment hub, Mr Merk says that Singapore must continue to improve on its efficiency and explore technological innovation.
