Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), India’s largest container port, has unveiled a new round of ”strategic initiatives” as part of its plans to drive a next phase of inclusive growth and transformation.

New projects launched under the programme include the expansion of JNPT’s Mumbai harbour channel, which will enable the port to handle larger container vessels with capacities of up to 12,500 TEU.

JNPT has deepened and widened the existing channel from 14 to 15 metres, optimizing utilization levels and speeding up turnaround times.

Also scheduled for 2019 is the completion of a Free Trade Warehouse for JNPT’s “Special Economic Zone” (SEZ), a facility that is set to accentuate the port as a preferred investment destination.

JNPT-SEZ benefits from global and hinterland connectivity, with its strategic proximity to JNPT and Navi Mumbai Airport making the trade hub a convenient location for investment purposes.

The establishment of a Free Trade Warehouse will provide equipment, transportation and handling facilities for a multitude of industries, including sectors such as electronics, pharmaceuticals and food processing, as well as manufacturers of cars and other vehicles.

According to a statement, these projects will elevate the status of JNPT among other global ports, expanding the country’s business capabilities in terms of maritime trade.

Shri Sanjay Sethi, JNPT Chairman, commented on the announcement: “JNPT has been a key contributor to the overall economic growth of our country and has evolved itself to be amongst the top 30 container ports globally.

“The international maritime sector is evolving rapidly and the business demands are constantly changing and hence it is imperative that we also develop our capabilities to stay ahead in the competitive market.

“At JNPT we have always been committed towards all round development so that as we progress, we carry the community and the nation too on the growth path.”
