Indian Register of Shipping launches Korean vessel
Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) has launched an inter-island passenger ferry at Mokpo, Korea—the first Korean-owned vessel to be classed with IRS.

Built by Miraero Shipbuilding for Dea Bu Marine Transport, the vessel will operate along Korea’s coast.

Although classification is not mandatory for such vessels in Korean waters, the owner has voluntarily chosen IRS.

The vessel will reportedly undergo key surveys, including an inclining experiment and sea trials, in coordination with the Flag Administration. Delivery is expected in the final week of June 2025.

Saikat Roychowdhury, Head of Operations, IRS said: “This project is a testament to IRS’s expanding global presence and our growing acceptance among discerning international owners.

“The decision by Dae Bu Marine Transport to opt for IRS Classification is both an endorsement of our technical capabilities and a significant step forward in serving vessels operating in Korean waters.”

Recently, Wan Hai Lines announced that its India–East Mediterranean 2 Service (IM2) is set to commence operations. This addition to Wan Hai’s global network is designed to offer a direct and reliable link between India and key ports in the Eastern Mediterranean, significantly boosting port coverage and regional connectivity.
