The Fort Kochi Coastal Police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the owner, captain, and crew of the Wan Hai 503 following the fire onboard.

According to Onmanorama, the complaint alleges reckless navigation despite the presence of combustible and hazardous materials on board, leading to environmental pollution and disruption of local fisheries.

The FIR includes charges under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including 282 (rash navigation), 285 (negligent conduct with respect to fire or combustible matter), and 286 (negligent conduct involving poisonous substances).

The Indian Coast Guard and Navy continue to monitor the situation, conducting salvage operations and assessing environmental impact.

Seawater samples are being tested along the Kannur coast amid concerns of chemical contamination.

On 16 June, Indian authorities successfully towed the Wan Hai 503 further offshore to contain the fire and reduce environmental risks.
