International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) has announced that its Ecuadorian subsidiary Contecon Guayaquil has achieved a new operational benchmark after servicing Ecuador’s largest ever ship.

The arrival of CMA CGM Cochin, a 10,000 TEU container vessel, follows the recent dredging of a 95-kilometre access channel, solidifying Guayaquil’s position as the country’s primary seaport.

The deepening of the access channel, as previously reported by PTI, has made Guayaquil the first facility of its kind in Ecuador that is able to accommodate ships of 10,000 TEU or more.

In addition to this, the City of Guayaquil has granted Jan de Nul Group a 25-year concession to carry out further dredging and maintenance of the access channel, a project which is expected to improve access to the port and create trade opportunities.

The Ecuadorian government is also working on the Southern Viaduct Project, a plan to connect the port to the southern part of the country via a new road and two bridges.

José Antonio Contreras, CEO of Contecon Guayaquil, said: “We congratulate and support the City of Guayaquil in its initiative to improve maritime access to the port.

“The dredging of the access channel paved the way for the arrival of these ships, which is something we look forward to as a huge boost to the local and national economy.”

“This also allows us to maximize our operations.  We’ve made the necessary investments in infrastructure, equipment, and technology to ensure the efficient handling of these neo-Panamax vessels.”
