Technical Paper: Sustainable Terminal Automation

He said: “Automation is still very new in the port industry, compared to many other fields such as the process industry, aviation, factory serial production and manufacturing. So far, a fairly limited amount of knowledge exists among port operators and equipment suppliers on how to operate and maintain automated systems efficiently.

“Successfully gaining this knowledge and managing the transformation in a sustainable way is the key question for ports and terminals seeking a competitive future.

“We believe that the port industry is at the start of the next big wave of automation. Kalmar as a global technology and innovation leader in the port automation field is strongly contributing to this transformation and addressing the challenges the industry is facing.

“My presentation will provide insight into the main drivers and critical success factors in an automated terminal project and additionally, how to manage them during project implementation. I also look at key differences of automation and manual operations, using real life examples.”

The second Kalmar expert, Mr Jouni Kyllönen, will be presenting on port automation at the conference, and will be announced shortly.
