A video released by the International Trademark Association shows an animated and informative clip of the expanded Panama Canal and how it can have an effect on consumers and brand owners around the world.

The number of ships that traverse the canal have soared by more than 14 times since it was opened in 1914, with cargo weighing 100,000 times the number of rockets that NASA used to transport man into space in 2014.

While an increase in container volumes may be a sign of a healthy economy, an increase in the number and size of ships carries its drawbacks.

Consumers are increasing being put at risk as a result of counterfeit goods being carried through the canal.  It is therefore essential that tighter measures are put in place to ensure that these goods do not make their way through the supply chain.
