Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) has added the HMM Green to its fleet, a new 9,000 TEU methanol-powered containership.
This vessel is the first of nine sister ships purchased in February 2023 by HD Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (seven vessels) and HJ Shipbuilding & Construction (two vessels).
Starting with this delivery, HMM will gradually acquire the other eight vessels by next year as part of its fleet growth strategy.
The HMM Green will store bio-methanol in the Port of Shanghai.

Bio-methanol, a sustainable fuel obtained from waste materials, can reduce carbon emissions by up to 65 per cent, eliminate SOx emissions, and reduce NOx emissions by up to 80 per cent when compared to traditional bunker fuel.
Furthermore, all vessels in this series are outfitted with the environmental technology necessary by major international ports.
This allows them to operate freely across all trade channels, while complying with EU ETS and FuelEU Maritime rules, guaranteeing preparation for future emissions reduction needs.
A company’s official stated: “This new vessel delivery is expected to accelerate HMM’s goal of achieving ‘Net-Zero by 2045. To enhance our competitiveness, we will continue to explore and adopt various fuel options.”
The containership will be used on HMM’s independently run FIM (Far East Asia, India, and the Mediterranean Sea) service.
Recently, the shipping company announced that the HMM Green vessel was undergoing a trial demonstration of an onboard 3D printing system. The goal was to test the technology’s functionality in real-world sailing circumstances and evaluate its practicality for purchasing vessel repair components.
