Historic May for cargo at the Port of New York and New Jersey

May 2022 was a historic month at the Port of New York and New Jersey as it became the second busiest month of cargo activity in port history.

Total volume increased by 6.1 per cent, totaling 845,305 TEU compared to 796,693 TEU in May 2021.

This number brings the port’s yearly total to 4,034,683 TEU.

Imports also rose by 7.6 per cent in May, totaling 426,423 TEU.

From January through May 2022, imported loads at the Port of New York and New Jersey reached 2,068,369, an 11.5 per cent increase over the 1,854,409 TEU recorded in the same period of 2021.

Exports in May totaled 118,552 TEU – a 11.8 per cent decrease.

Exported loads reached 554,480 TEU from January through May 2022 versus 586,264 TEU in the same period of 2021, a 5.4 per cent decrease.

Rail volume in May increased slightly from the previous year’s figure. A total of 62,087 containers moved through the Port, an increase of 0.1 per cent of the prior year’s May figure. Rail volume from January through May 2022 fell by 5.1 per cent from the same period of 2021.
