In an effort to ensure safe and optimum navigation of vessels, Korea-based Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has developed its Hyundai Intelligent Collision Avoidance Support System (HiCASS).

By detecting potential obstacles such as ships and reefs within 50km, the system can prevent collisions and also find the optimum route for ships.

In addition, the enhanced accuracy of the system has been claimed to enable vessels to identify hazards based on the type of vessel, weather conditions, waves and wind.

The system is equipped with a collision notification system that signals varying levels of caution and danger to ensure safe operation at sea.

HHI completed its own performance test on the system by running it on a containership and an LNG carrier in May and June 2014 respectively.

HiCASS will be commercialised from 2016, following performance and stability testing on long-distance routes.
