To kick-start the Easter holidays, PTI has put together a list of its top five stories so far for the first quarter of 2015.

5. Containerships: Then and Now

At number five, this piece focused on the evolution of the containership, dating back to the 1950s when the largest ship was the ‘Ideal X’ tanker, with a capacity of 1,000 TEU.

Today’s mega-ships are much larger, with the world’s largest being the MSC Oscar at a staggering 19,224 TEU. This was recently joined by the MSC Oliver as the largest ship in the world.

4. A Tour of APM Terminals’ Maasvlakte II

In fourth place is a piece featuring a video that looks at APM Terminals Maasvlakte II container terminal, which has recently announced an initiative to facilitate the exchange of containers between its Maasvlakte terminals.

The terminal is the first in the world to achieve zero-emissions status in early 2015.

3. Is the ‘Vindskip’ the Future Cargo Ship?

This article was centred on a new design of containership introduced by Norwegian company Lade AS which aims to significantly cut pollution levels by relying on its high sides as sails.

This design comes at a time when arctic emissions may continue to rise to levels that could be as high as 600% by the year 2025.

The International Chamber of Shipping recently said that it was confident of better environmental performance due to the binding agreement set out by the International Maritime Organization to lower sulphur emissions to 0.5%.
