Hapag-Lloyd to start real-time container tracking

Hapag-Lloyd has announced the installation of live trackers on all its containers at the end of this month.

The news follows April’s update, when Hapag-Lloyd announced it will become the first carrier in the world to implement technology to enable worldwide monitoring of shipping containers and analyse the location, movements, and status in real-time.

“Once the devices are permanently installed on our containers, they will be able to transmit data in real time and thereby make supply chains more transparent and efficient,” said the company in its recent statement.

“For example, they will provide GPS-based location data, measure temperatures, and monitor sudden vibrations of the container.”

In the coming weeks, the carrier will start to equip its container fleet with devices from TradeTech company Nexxiot AG and with devices from ORBCOMM, a leading global provider of Internet of Things (IoT) solutions.

Customers will begin to get access to the technology in early 2023. The entire fleet will become live trackable by the end of 2023 according to the company.

The new technology is set to offer visibility and boost transparency across the supply chain.

Hapag-Lloyd posted earnings growth in the first half year of 2022, securing an Earnings Before Interest Taxes and Depreciation (EBITDA) of $10.9 billion.

Group Earnings Before Interest and Taxes (EBIT) is around $9.9 billion for 1H 2021. This is a threefold increase on the first half of 2021.
