The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) has said it is on track to handle 4.36 million TEU and break its volume record for a calendar year.

The figure, if it is reached, would represent an 8% increase on the whole of 2017.

In a statement, the GPA has said that the Port of Savannah handled 4 million TEU between January and November 2018, an 11.4% increase on 2017.

It expects a strong finish to 2018 just as strongly, with 151 vessels due to call at the port before the end of the year.

Furthermore, it also expects traffic to be aided by a change to the timetable which saw some vessel calls originally scheduled for late November pushed back to early December.

Additionally, many carriers are expected to make above-average cargo exchanges in the run-up to Chinese New Year on February 5.

Speaking about the projections, GAP Executive Director, Griff Lynch, said: “Cargo expansion related to growth in inland markets, as well as increased demand right here in the U.S. Southeast have shifted the global logistics arena in Savannah’s favor with more port users choosing to serve their customers via Georgia’s deepwater terminals.

The GPA board chairman, Jimmy Allgood, also commented: “Every additional container we move means new business in trucking, rail and warehousing.

“The ripple effect of the success at Georgia’s ports means additional jobs and income coming to our neighbors and communities across the state.”
