Alphaliner has reported that there will be a 5.6% growth in container fleet capacity in 2018 after orders placed in 2017 went up by 140% on the previous year to 671,641 TEU.

The shipping consultancy said that scheduled newbuild deliveries currently stand at 1.49 million TEU, but that scrapping would remove 350,000 TEU of capacity.

Lars Jensen, CEO, SeaIntelligence, recently forecasted the industry’s developments as far into the future as 2025 in his 'Liner Shipping in 2025' technical paper

The most recent newbuild news has come from Hyundai Merchant Marines's President and CEO, C.K. Yoo, who revealed that the Korean container shipping company is planning to order 22,000 TEU containerships in 2018.
